Hey George, Yeah, it's me. I was out in California for a lot of years, then back in batavia for a lot of years, and now I'm in Arkansas. As to the bonfires weren't they at the same place burkel used to have his octoberfests until he started having them at Gil's in Wyoming. Ah. Mooney's. if I wasn't the only one I was one the few that actually bought something from the bar when they closed. It was that baker's table that used to be in the back that Ronnie Catita and I used to take turns sleeping on. Yeah those were the days, Old Man Moonie would open the bar at 6:30 or 7:30 in the morning..Yeah lots of memories. Blurred and scattered. Babe I was at one of the Newport Jazz festivals, when it was in Newport, and they had rock groups, but after that one because people stormed the fences, they moved it to new york, or they stopped having rock bands. The fri. night I remember, Rahsaan Roland Kirk played either before or after Tull (Ian Anderson had taken lessons from him) and I remember passing out during Jeff Becks performance (Rod Stewart singing). That Sat. I saw Miles Davis, Frank Zappa and the mothers, Art Blakely and the Jazz Messangers, and Jimmy Smith on the Hammond organ. Maybe it was the same one. I can't remember. (Cause I was there) Wink wink nod nod. I got some great shots of miles on slides and then lost them heading out to the college from hartleys one day. Hey Jimmy. I don't remember that story. I caught Hendrix at Kleinhams. I was telling someone a while ago I'm so old my first concert was Peter, Paul and Mary also at Kleinhams. And my next one was Judy Collins. Of course I saw tons of other concerts after that rock, pop, and jazz. Remember when you were down visiting me in ny and we were at the vanguard seeing Rahsaan, we were in the head and I was freaking out cause the toilet kept spitting on me. Well back to batavia stories. Yeah Moonies, the Hamilton, Canalies, The zoo, angels, the tijuana, williams park, burkel's woods, the campgrounds, the county forest, the sand wash, the train station (we used to hyperventilate and melt into the floor), the college mixers (3dollars for music and all the beer you could drink). the real question is how did we all survive that. Ha ha ha. Cousin brucie

Hey Babe:
It's good to hear your excitement and enthusiasm to bring all of us together Babe!
Thanks to you too Bill for the event and Mike too for the website!
Here's a big run-on sentence or two for you.
Yes Babe, I remember all those great blues, rock and jazz bands all in one place at Newport. Don't forget to mention Louis Armstrong though - I believe it was his last concert. I also recall The Band concert in Buffalo -- amazing how we made it there and home again all the time - usually without a scratch. We did many trips to Buffalo and Rochester to see Led Zeppelin, Tom Rush, B.B. King, Johnny Winter, Jethro Tull - wherever the good music was, we'd just hop in a car on a moments notice and get there. I always jumped at every opportunity to see Bob Dylan in concert - and saw several good ones back then - both with the Band and solo - he even helped me meet the Lord (Slow Train Coming album). Then, there was Strawberry Fields in Canada. I believe Fred S. went with me on that one too - memory's a little foggy - but I believe Dylan, Sly and the Family Stone and Joplin were there. We hitch-hiked across the border - and almost got turned back. I can't remember how many times we drove through the worst snow storms to have a good time, see the local bands - whether at the Byron Country Club, the Zanza Barn or Albion Lanes (Little Caesar & The Romans, etc.). - really can't remember all the names. Wild Bill & The Buffalo Yankees was one of my favorites - Bill, Joe C., Jim P., Larry M., Chuck H. and others - I even went to Texas to check in on them one summer. I remember going to dances with The Squires too - I met Jim Palumbo for the first time then - he was outside on a band break - rubbing his hands together to keep warm in the cold. I believe they were playing in a building (can't remember the name) on the corner near the old St. Joseph's Church (beautiful Cathedral next to the old white children's home mansion). Jim P. came to visit me once in Tennessee - I will miss him. So many fond memories of going to Kustus's soda fountain and Pontillo's Pizzeria right after school, high school football and dances - and the beautiful Dipson Theatre - where we could be dropped off as young kids and our parents would not have to worry about anything going wrong. What an ideal place for kids to grow up back then. The Urban Renewal stuff really ruined so much of the original down-town landscape - they had little vision to restore the old architecture back then. Went out with Rick Lullo on one of my trips to Houston a few years back - we ran into ZZ-Top at the hotel I was staying at and we brought them up to my room to see the eagle. Karen Lullo called to let me know about Larry's operation. She said he was doing OK. Anyone know the latest about how he's doing? I'd love to see Kenny Veltz come back to Batavia in July - Is he still in NYC? I really like Kevin Moyles idea to dedicate a segment of the show to all the friends that are no longer with us. I had dinner with Kevin a couple years ago in LA - he gave us his CD - Gretchen and I played it for our two younger girls on the way to Nashville a couple weeks ago - looking at colleges for our 17 year old. Well, probably too much info and questions. I could go on - you all really got me goin' God bless you all. Al Cecere

wow! what a great site. good job guys! most likely most people here have no clue of who i am. i was lucky enough to spend two years in batavia. i moved there in my senior year, graduation ceremony at the old mancuso theater. i had a lot of fun and have some very cool memories of that wonderful town. unfortunately, a lot of memories are just a blur............wonder why? lol. batavia is a dream town, so family oriented, so pure. so unlike chicago which is where i've lived for the past 30 years. i yearn to return to a friendly town like batavia, where people care about each other and keep in touch. i was wondering if anyone has given any thought to blocking hotel rooms for the many out of towners who will be attending this years ramble. from what i read here on this site, the ramble is going to get bigger as the years pass and a new venue is going to be needed for ramblestock! it seems that its such a cool idea that it will continue on through future generations, realizing what a cool idea this is to keep the music artists in touch. great job guys! true musicians who prove that the music is in the heart, and never leaves. country roads........take me home. peace. debi

Just wanted to say hi to everyone that I knew so well and hung out with all around Batavia and surrounding areas.
It's been wonderful reading some of the notes and reliving the people, places and experiences that are part of Batavia's past and present fabric.
I hope to bring my wife Gretchen and the two youngest of our five children- Julia (great singer for 17) and little Gretchen (14) - to The Ramble and to visit family and friends this July.
I got to talk to Jim Palumbo before he passed on to meet his Creator. We shared many great memories together - back in the day. His spirit is flying like an eagle right now.
I heard Larry Merritt had an operation and hop he is doing well with recovery - we also shared quite a few past parties together. Always enjoyed his sweet guitar pickin'!
Bill McDonald was always a good friend and still is - look forward to seeing him and, of course, many many others (too many to mention).
Fred Stone and I were traveling buddies to Woodstock. Still remember vividly waking up laying in the mud one morning to the National Anthem being played by Hendrix...and so many other good artists. Then there was the Newport Rock and Jazz Festival too. What a time, and tales too tall to tell - because no one would believe them.
Hope to see you all when we travel up from the hills of Tennessee (Great Smoky Mountains).
God bless.

don't want to be an email "geek", but would like to post a few thoughts on growing up in batavia. i worked for my dad at ebling laundry in my younger years, then on to doehler-jarvis, then to graham mfg. couldn't wait for the weekend to go to big d daddy's ale house for a "few", then to sunny's for a "few", then to the country club for ALOT!!!!!!! couldn't wait to hear bill, babe, jim, joe, chuck, rick, caroline and face play some great music. my favorite, caroline singing "take it easy" by the eagles. the song went on forever and we didn't want the party to stop!! great, great times ya know. wish we could turn the clock back and re-live those special times. sometimes we complained about batavia, but let's be thankful we grew up there or we would have not made the friends we have right? well, thanks for letting me "ramble" on, and see you all soon. skip.

In 1967 Jim Hendrix was coming to Rochester, NY. The school band had some extra tickets, so I got one and went to see Hendrix. Rick Haitz got the other ticket. Before the show at the War Memorial, Mr. Tom Everett the Batavia High School Band director ( now one of finest trombonists on the planet ). Took us on a tour of the Eastman School of Music. Our guide that day was an unknown trumpet/flugelhorn player and Eastman teacher name Chuck Mangione. After the tour Rick and I got into the War Memorial before the show and we wandering around on the stage with all of the Jimi Hendrix gear. We were even touching his guitars and amps. I guess we looked the part and no one said anything to us for some time until one of the setup crew caught on and chased us out. That evening was an crucial "Experience". Hearing that sound...something so new...so important. A life changing event. From Chuck Mangione to Jimi Hendrix.......all in the same day....... Too much.... Jim "Marone" Pastore

Hi Carol,
Unfortunately, there's no way for people to post photos on the Ramble website at this time. If this becomes possible, I'll post instructions here on the Bulletin Board.
The best way to share pictures, videos, and sound clips is to post the items yourself on a personal website, or one of the free places like MySpace.com or YouTube.com and then put a link to that site here on the Bulletin Board.
Or if you want, email the pictures you'd like posted to my email address above and as more space is available on the Ramble website, I'll upload them. Tell me a little about the picture (who, what, where, when, etc.).

OK - if we're going on the Ramble record with dates & # 's, Larry Merritt swears that ' 68 tele is his because Dave DiSanto didn't pay him for it. I know my brother Clint gave Dave 125 for it, I gave Clint 150 for it (he was probably tired of me borrowing it), and I gave it to my brother Skip because I thought he needed some gear (semi-hollow body - too much feed back). It's worth 7 or 8K now, that should make Larry feel way better. Hey - speaking of Ramble record, why not record the Ramble?

Old Batavia in my mind is pre-Urban renewal of Downtown. Mancuso Motors, Mooney's Bar, The New Hamilton Hotel, Dipsons Theater, The Mill Outlet, Carrs, J.J. Newberry's, W.T. Grant's with three levels, toys were on the third floor. Montgomery Ward's on Mainstreet with two floors. I think there was an S.S. Kreske's too, but I may be hallucinating again. There were jobs at Sylvania and Eaton, Yale and Towne. You could work a Kissels if you weren't afraid of molten metal. I remember that someone talked me into entering the drive in through the exit with a vanload of drunk teenage boys and girls and a driver, me, who shouldn't have been driving either. The owner came and gave us a hard time and I squealed back out of there throwing gravel everywhere before they could call the cops. Umm, that's enough for now. Oh, man. Don't start me talkin', I'll tell everything I know.

My most vivid memories are of playing pinball against Danny Maas at Mooney's Bar on Mainstreet before the stupidity of Urban Renewal destroyed the heart of downtown. I remember looking through thousands of cut out albums at the Batavia Mill Outlet priced at 50 cents each. I bought Townes Van Zandt's first album from that bin. So did my brother. Steve Huff tipped us off. I remember going to the New Hamilton Hotel and having to go down to the basement to pee. I remember the Tryst on Jackson Street and the Home on Mainstreet in what used to be a hardware store. I think you had to go downstairs there too. I remember peeing on ice in Mooney's bar (I've got lots of peeing memories, don't I?) and being served cheap draft beer by Chris Mooney and his older brother. I remember going up to the Mooney's apartment above the bar with Brucie, after closing hours, and sitting quietly listening to a stereo that glowed in the dark nearly as much as I was lit up at the time. Everyone had to be quiet or we would wake Old Man Mooney and you sure didn't want to do that. I remember going to Canale's after Mooney's was closed down by the ignorance of Urban renewal. I liked it fine but it just wasn't the same. I remember lots of things from lots of periods in my life, but these are from some of the best. (Chapter 1 of 40)

Sad news about Jimmy P. My brother Skip used to take me to the Hamilton on Main St when he was playing there, Last summer was the beginning of something that was always one of the best things about Genesee County, so many players, so much live music. How about Mooney's in the memory column. I bought a 68 telecaster thinline from David DiSanto for $125.00 in 1976, sold it to my brother Keith, its still in the family. Anybody out there have some good gear I used to have and should have kept stories? That pic of Clint Worthington on the photo page is an up and coming guitar player to watch. Cheers , cj

Hey to all - please excuse any spelling errors in words or names as I suck at it. Levon Helm (drummer for the Band) tells a story about Stan Celest (piano) imparting the ability to play in the pocket to Rick Danko just by a "look" he gave him while in the studio. I don't know who "looked" at Jim Palumbo, but I was always struck by his ability to keep a rhythm section centered. The way he approached a note and jumped on it at the most optimum time. Another good one done gone - he is missed. Looking forward to this summer - it's a good thing you all are doing. Hey Rich Lullo - I still have the Les Paul I bought from you some 35 years ago!

A few marketing initiatives are being pulled together for Ramble #2. Local radio appearances are being scheduled, there'll be coverage by the Daily News but I'll also contact my colleagues at the D&C, ArtVoice, Freetime, etc for articles. I'm organizing a poetry reading of lyrics right now so if anyone is interested in "reading" their songs (originals and covers), at GO ART!'s Cultural Center let me know. Also...trying to hook up some poetry slam artists for July so if you know of any tragically hip poets out there....hook 'em up with me. If anyone has any other ideas for promotion/marketing, let me know...I'm open to any creative ideas, but I also understand the desire to keep an overblown marketing frenzy out of the picture....hence the use of "free" advertising via Public Service Announcements, etc. I'll post a schedule of promotion opportunities as it becomes available. If you are in the area and wouldn't mind participating, you can contact me for further details.

Concerning Jim Palumbo, I met Jim in 1964/1965. We grew to be close friends and he also had a great directive presence in my life. When you saw Jim you had to ask" What's new Jim, What's Shakin'?" and he'd tell you. He was always way ahead with the music always introducing me to new things, new sounds. In 1968 he came rushing up to me one day with a new record by Traffic with a flute/woodwind player ( Chris Woods ) on it. He kept telling me to listen to this one tune. "It's like jazz. like jazz" he would say. A few months later I decided to start playing woodwinds. Jim was never "behind the beat"... "Always ahead of it".......Always looking for something new. " What's new Jim? What's Shakin ?"

The amount of great musicians that were born and raised in Genesee County and some who have moved to other states leaves me to believe there is something in that water!!! I'm looking forward to attending this year since I'm not playing steady in a band. It would be nice to see all us old musicians get together, chew the fat, and play.
Anyone looking for a lead guitarist with vocals?

What a great way to celebrate all the wonderful musical talent that came out of Batavia area. I thank my cousin Patty (Mcmanis) Feola for forwarding this on to me. Multiple trips back to WNY in '05 and '06 got us to purchasing property in the Finger Lakes area. So many names and memories...quite a few of them passed through the San Diego over the years...some stayed.
My wife presented me with a family website she's been putting together. It'll give anyone who's interested an idea of what we've been doing. We plan on being at the 2007 Ramble.

Wow!
It's great too see a lot of names I haven't seen in a while. Hope everyone is doing ok. Like everyone else I too will miss Palumbo. Of course we all are getting old though. How many of you ever thought you'd make it to this age and still be coherent. Christ, even Lamanski is married and living in Buffalo ("Where's Albert") And speaking of Albert has anyone contacted Albert Pappalardo (sorry for the spelling). I believe Delson or Lowe Farnsworth have his contact info in the bay area. It's great to see gail ebling is still around. I know a lot of the names I bring up may not be musicians but during that time period we all hung and lived together. The college had just opened in Batavia and it was the 60's. A lot of our memories are great but seeing this is a bulletin board a lot of them should be kept to private emails not to offend friends and families (those who were there know what I am saying).
Hi Joann. How are you doing? Maybe if they get back together we can do that film with you and your friend Linda. Chuckle! I'm still the same.
Hi to Tracy. Like babe I knew your dad too like many of the people on this site. I spent a lot of time at the Hartley house (Dick and Dixie's (could you say hello for me to them)). And if I remember, (some things are a little ( a lot) fuzzy from back then, I was riding around with your father on that night just before you were born. He had to drop me off to head to the hospital. Say hi to Kim for me too. I will try to send Terri an email. Say hi to your mom too. I will give Scott a call in a couple of weeks. I talk to him every couple of years or so. Well hope to be seeing more familiar names showing up here.

This is Tope and Harry Nourse (steel guitar) owners of North Fork Music Park in Warsaw ,NY. Bill Pitcher and all the Ghost Riders are long time visitors of North Fork and our good friends. Also see lots of friends in your email list. We have not heard about this Batavia Ramble ... sorry to say. Glad to hear about it now. We do have a web site but it still needs to have the many pictures of all the guys and gals that have jammed up at North Fork put on it yet...and we sure do have pictures. I really like your site. Thought the pictures in the square (empty and full) were great...so was the Batavia Daily News article and your bulletin board. Congratulations on a job well done. I'm sure your efforts are going to yield lots of interest in Batavia Ramble.

Thanks Babe for the sweet words. I know I'll see my dad again some day! Yes, Scott, he lives in Seattle, he does restoration for a museum. Kim is a RN! can you believe it, in Florida. Terri and her daughter Emelia live in Ohio. She was here for a visit a couple of years ago. Her and John split up a few years back. They still hook up from time to time though. Dick, and Dixie are doing great! I would love to get down to see them, now that I'm back on the east coast. After spending some time with my dad in Ca. I ended up living in Colorado for about 10 years. It's beautiful there, but I wanted my 2 girls to have Na Na Pat in there lives. No regrets, except for these COLD days, and some major cabin fever! Take care, thanks again. Tracy

To My Fellow Rambler's
Great job on the site Mike, great job to "Wild Bill" for not only getting this event going initially, but creating a venue for any and all type of artists young and old.
In my humble opinion I suggest you think about setting some time aside and dedicating some special music to the likes of George Tundo, Nick Naples, Jim Polumbo, Paul Lambert, "Face" Kessler, Bob "Purple" Hayes, Rick McClain, Karen Barone, Bob Cahoon, Brian Morse, Dan Hale, Sal Della Pena to name a few.
I'm happy to see that this festive energy that has always flourished in this wonderful town continues to prosper.
Last but not least, there's rumblings that Billy Mac might be paroled by 07-07-07. Awesome!!
All the best, Kevin M.

Saying, "Hello to all!" Can't wait to meet, greet, and share remembrances of many of the folks who wove the fabric of the arts and music scene of good ol' home town Batavia for at least the last half century. From the roots to the present, a good time for folks to let loose and enjoy a common creative spirit. "Pitch"

Left Batavia right after the blizzard of 77 and still living in California. I've stayed in touch with some of the old gang, and especially enjoyed mine and Laurie's "Old Friends Reunion" back in 95. Bill and Larry played and we caught up with many old friends in Williams Park. Missed the first Ramble, but will try to make the next one. Hope everyone who reads this is doing well - Batavia remains in my heart. But...I don't have to shovel snow in there. Love to all. P.S. Hey Hiscutt - they don't call me Pattie Puke anymore - okay dude?

Hello to everyone! It's great to hear from you all. Even better to see you again. Paul Hiscuit, you are getting better on those drums every time I hear you. I didn't get a chance to play with everyone that I wanted to last year but hopefully this year it will happen. I miss Jimmy Palumbo and had a chance to talk with him a month ago. We laughed and remembered when he first came to town. He was a singer back in 64 but I thought he would be a great fit for the "Squires" He really had Mick Jagger down, moves, clothes etc. No one back then had a bass player so Jim bought a 6 string guitar and him and I spent many nights (including week-ends) in my cellar and learned a million songs with him playin bass on a 6 string. We got Nick Naples on keyboards ,Dave DiSanto on rhythm guitar, Kenny Veltz on drums and myself on lead and the Squires happened but we needed Palumbo to seal the deal. Palumbo always came up with the new stuff commin out, he had a knack for it. Never a dull moment when Jim P was around. HE WILL BE MISSED! Sorry for taken up so much space, Looking forward to hear from every one .
Health and happiness to you all........

Ca., but about 4 years ago, it was no longer. Don't know what happened. I miss him. Take good care all. Tracy

Hey, Cousin Brucie!!! How the heck are ya? I like the rumor you are starting. I think the Plague should come out of hiding and you alluded to Indian Falls and Van Gothem - how about Brother Wind???
Take care all. I'm checking to see if we can make it this year - we have an annual commitment in the Boundary Waters for the week of the 4th but we're working on it.

Jim Palumbo was diagnosed with lung cancer in June of 2006. He had chemo and radiation and was doing good. At Christmas time, he took a quick turn for the worse. I went to see him in Florida January 24th - February 3rd. He passed away February 4th, 2007.

I'm just starting the rumor, it has no legs to stand on. Most of them still live in batavia, Dick, Steve and tom. Only delson and kandall have to come from out of state kandall ohio bob california. Maybe John can get van gothem to show up too and do the things they used to at indian falls. Well hope everyone is well. Real sorry to hear about Jimmy Palumbo. I will miss him.
