Up until 1961when we moved to South Byron, my family lived at 47 Washington Ave. The house was a cool place, my father's pride and joy. Directly accross the street was Happ's Grocery and to the right, Bill Bird's Music...a neat little combo of two buildings.I was only 8 or 9 but of course I hung out at Happs and Bird's. Hey, those free wooden piano crates made great hide outs...until it rained. We were fascinated with John Brunson as there was always music coming from the store. I recall they all wore neckties and were very nice to the neighbor kids. Bill was very distinguished looking, a rather Lawrence Welk of Washington Avenue. John would talk to us and play little chops for us. My mother was a pretty good piano player and she signed me up for lessons. But John was totally booked so I went with a nice guy named Miles. When we moved, that neighborhood was bid a fond farewell. Then I saw The Squires at Notre Dame and the piano had to go. It was nothing less than an electric guitar for me. Jim Catino is still an icon to this day...but the first real musicain I remember was Johhny B.

hey fred, I believe I saw Johnny Brunson a few times at the Villa Capri. He was great. Jimmy Pastore used to get us to go see him I think, not sure. Also a strange question, you mentioned Cecil Kisiel, did you ever work the 3rd shift at Kiesil's as night supervisor? If so how you doing? I was the guy that used to feed the pots metal and clean up. Remember the night I was driving the mule and I ran into one of the beams 3 times before I could get around it and Mr. Kiesel was up on a machine checking it out and just laughed at me. For the short time I worked there I have a lot of memories. bruce

I was at the Center St. Smokehouse Fri. eve. and the Buffalo Road Show was playing. I've never heard these guys before. All I can say is WOW! The first set was accoustic, and the vocals were AMAZING! The second set was electric and the guy playin the red hollowbody Gibson was on fire. He is one of the best players Iv'e ever heard. Can anyone tell me his name? I think my girl has a crush on him. We would like to know where we can catch these guys again. Can anyone help us out. Do they have a website? New Fan

Labor Laws! I played at the Paddock, when I was eleven. Of coarse my father had to be there and spoil all of my fun.... just kidding. I still remember peeking into the back window behind Riccobono's and watching Bobby B. on drums, and Dave P. on guitar. I think it was Ellen and the Beachcombers. A little fog in those brain cells. My father saw me looking in as he was driving by and yelled "Get Home!". Chas

Here's a clip from the article -Tallan 'T-Man' Latz performs Monday, June 30, 2008, at Summerfest in Milwaukee. A blues guitar prodigy, the 8-year-old has played in bars and clubs, including the House of Blues in Chicago, and even jammed with Les Paul and Jackson Browne. However, the state of Wisconsin says that Tallan cannot play in taverns and nightclubs because of state child labor laws.

Babe People in Batavia really didn't know how incredible Johnny Brunson was. His real main influence was Art Tatum (check him out on 'you tube and get blown away'), he was also blind. My father played guitar with both Brunson and Tatum and all by ear. Johnny had perfect pitch. I'd pick him up for a gig and one time it was raining and he told me the note my windshield wipers squeeked in and also told me the exact metronome marking that they clicked in (but he said they rushed the beat). We were playing a ballad once and a guy walked by with squeeky shoes and Johnny played the exact note on piano and incorporated in his solo. We all broke up and could hardly play the rest of the night. Johnny had the corniest jokes too. He called me up on the phone once and asked if I was interested in playing a gig for a "Watermelon Roast". After a gig his famous thing was to go to Miss Batavia dinner and get two grilled cheese sandwiches. Once he sent me in with an order and he waited in the car. I handed the waitress the order and it was for two 'bubble gum' sandwiches. The waitress almost peed her pants. Johnny was a killer on chord substitutions. Not only did he know at least 5,000 tunes cold and in any key but he'd never play the same chorus and set of chords the same way. This blew my mind as a bassist/guitarist. He later on showed me the trick. Relating chords to a numeric system instead of by the chord names (this method was taught also at Berklee). I think the only cat that could keep up with Johnny was my father. Once I was rehearsing with "The Beau Gentry", Jimmy Bertrand's Band, and we were trying to take off a tune from the Beetles Rubber Soul Album ' Michelle'. I got my father to come to the rehearsal one night and he transcribed the freakin' whole record for us. Jimmy Bertrand totally flipped out that night. And Jimmy had great ears and even he couldn't do it at the time it came out.Imagine growing up with a father like that in the house. I was afraid to practice.LOL. Love him alot and miss him and Johnny Brunson also. Johnny was like an uncle/father to me. Thanks Johnny for all you gave to me and to the all musicians/students/people in Batavia. Also thanks Dad for the same.

Hello fellow Rambler's... As you know the NY State Gov. made some drastic cuts in financial aide. I work for the Genesee County Mental Health Assoc.(GCMHA)as a program aide, and our funding was cut considerably. My idea at this time is to have a guitar raffle as a fundraiser, to be drawn at next year's Ramble.. no cheapo guitar, either a nice Fender Strat. or Gibson Les Paul or...SG Supreme. American made of course. I am taking a poll to see which model you folks would be more apt to purchase tickets on. My vote of course would be the SG Supreme. I wouldn't hesitate to purchase $20 worth of tickets my self, as I am in between a main axe. So we don't tie up ramble web space, you can just send an email to my yahoo address with your vote. Chas

johnny brunson, i remember him! omg! didn't he used to play at either the elks club or the legion, or somewhere? i remember him playing a "mean" organ. fred, how ya doin? you should've stuck around for more than 6 practices with the corp. we really did have a great time. i don't remember a whole lot of fights, except the one we had with the boston crusaders. that was pretty brutal. i think it was all a competition thing. we hated them and they hated us. not to brag, but even the judges didn't like us. guess we were just too good. haha! we had little necklaces that were the shape of a hand with the middle finger sticking out around out necks the nite we won the national drum title. kind of a protest for all the times we got screwed by the judges. in the end though, we won out! fred, i think we had an equipment manager, mr, stone, any relationship?? anyway, thx for letting me ramble about the drum corp a little. it brings back a lot of memories of my brief musical career, haha! take care all, skip.

I worked with Vic Cionetti in a band with Cecil Kisiel back in the '60's at Getner's and Alex's Tiajuana Lounge just before i went to Boston. It was a very revolutionary band for it's time. It mainstreamed Jazz/Rock/Blues and Funk. Lot of sound for three guys. Vic use to double on all the reeds and did a fantastic job. I had the opportunity of doubling on guitar and bass. But, my real exposure to authentic Jazz was with John Brunson's Band. Vic also played in that. Vic and I had a mutual respect for the same quality of music and direction but were not necessarily 'compadres'. Never were in high shcool either. I think it stemmed from the Drum Corps. More than just a Corps St Joe's was a cult. I was in Mighty St Joe's for six rehearsals and that was enough for me. I was already a avid lover of the Big Band sound of Woddy Herman, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Stan kenton and of course Buddy Rich's Band of whom toured with for nine months. But my records were not impressive back then for the Might St Joe Alumni because they didn't respect anything more than a double high C on trumpet. The higher the better. Maynard Fergusson was the man cause he could call all kinds of dogs for dinner with his mouth piece. In fact Miles was taboo imagine that ( wow I can't believe I actually went to school in that town ). Ya Skip the parking lots were full of listeners/fans and the Might St Joe's were a great musical inspiration to a lot of Batavians but do you remember the huge fights during and after the competitions? Very bloody.. You also had to have had your testosterone levels checked before you join. It had little to do with the kind of music I've studied and a lot to do with who you could knock out with one punch (anyone remember who "Slugger " was?) and how many chicks you could score. Oh how naive I was back then. Ya Vic you've done some great things musically and I'm very proud of you; and don't forget I came out of your enterage' also; but you also stood by once when Gary Klue cracked my tooth and broke my nose in the St Joe's parking lot and just laughed. (Wanna try that now Gary? LOL). Gotta laugh at old days all the memories from Batavia. I just gotta thank the Universe that there's a thing called time and I went with it. Vic I missed the old times but the musical maturity and the experience of playing with your brother Nic in Brunson's Band was the real deal. Nic had no 'ego' and no sinisism just PURE music. What a man. Anyone out there remember Nic Cionetti? Babe, nothing like rehearsing with Johnny Brunson's Band and talk about stage quality, no comparison, right Victor. Love you Vic and love the Tiajuana Days but I gotta call it like it was. PS: I always did love your Soprano sound. Hey maybe I'll call Cisel and we'll have a reunion. I've got 12 basses now. Six Acoustic and six electric. Pick one. LOL. PEACE. Hope you're healthy. FJS.

Hey Debi, I can attest to the great fishing at Honeoye Lake. When I moved back to Western New York from San Diego in 1992, I bought a lake front house on Honeoye Lake. It was only about 15 feet from the water's edge. I remember one time catching 72 fish in 1 hour off the end of our dock. Mostly bluegill, perch, and other small panfish, but there are some big walleye and pickerel in the deeper parts of the lake. My house was on West Lake Road, directly across from the State Boat Launch on East Lake Road and I lived there for 12 years until relocating to the Philadelphia area in 2005. The fish were delicious and eating them caused no ill effects on me. Well, on second thought.... Good luck fishing!

babe, great post about vic cionetti. if i may, i'd like to post about my relationship with vic and st. joe's drum corp. back in the mid 60's, i joined the jr. corp for st. joe's. i think it was in 66 or 67 that i graduated to the "big" corp" known as mighty st. joes. i started out playing the cymbals in the drum section. i was fortunate to be a member of the drum section in 1968 when we won the national title for drum sections. shortly after, vic taught me how to play the drums and for the next few years, i, along with vic, joey cintorino, john klein, and others, toured the country performing for thousands with the drum corp. when we practiced at batavia downs, the parking lot used to be packed with people just to watch us practice. i never played again after the corp. folded, but wish i had pursued my drumming as i grew older. who knows, maybe i'd be on stage at the ramble, haha! anyway, vic, if you're reading this, i want you to know what a great time i had growing up with you in the drum corp. it's was an experience i'll never forget! i wish you much success!! thx for letting me ramble on, and i hope vic will be remembered as one of the great musicians from batavia and maybe someday he could come back to batavia to perform. that'd be great!!! thanks all, skip.

I just stumbled on this website. This is so great that many of the local musicians who I remember are not only still playing, but have developed a music scene in Batavia. I was part of the group that helped set up the Tryst where the Plague and others played. Later, I was a roadie one summer for The Back Street Boogie Band. So, I felt like part of the Batavia music scene even though I had no musical talent. I hope there is a Ramble next summer, I will try to make it.

Honeoye Lake is one of the better lakes to fish around here if you want action. Not a lot of large fish but alot of good mid-size and smaller fish. It can produce some huge bluegills as it is known for it's bluegill fishing. It's my favorite spot in the summertime!
