Please notice the new Hometown Musicians link on the left-hand side of every Ramble page.  The old photos of local musicians (or is that photos of old local musicians?) have been moved to where they always belonged.  Right here on the Ramble website.

All Rochester Roadrunner accounts come with 5 MB of free webspace for the account holder to create a personal website. Most people don't even know they have it, or if they do, what to do with it.

The original Ramble site was created on the 5 MB of free webspace belonging to Bill McDonald. It is about 95% full with no room for additional photos (that is why the old photos were temporarily posted on my Verizon website).

Babe Catino has graciously donated his 5 MB of free webspace to the Ramble too. This effectively doubles the size of the Ramble website allowing me to move the photos here.  I even added a several new pictures to the ones we already had.  Please check the new Hometown Musicians page out.

If any other Rochester Roadrunner users are not using their 5 MB of free webspace and would like to donate it for use by the Ramble, please send me an email for more information.  The more space we have, the more messages, photos, news, artwork, etc. we can post for everyone's enjoyment.

Also, please keep in mind, that the Ramble has not spent $.01, nor asked for $.01.  It is 100% volunteer, non-profit, just for the darn fun of it.

Mike

Wow, I didn't even know he was sick. What a shame. Mark was a gracious drummer who always asked me to sit in on a couple of songs whenever I was where he was playing. He will surely be missed by all of us - thoughts & prayers his family.

On a lighter note, I just wanted to say hello to all the old friends that have been writing in, who I haven't seen in years. It's so great to hear from you and I hope to see all of you at this year's Ramble. Jim Pastore, sorry I didn't stick to the sax, but thanks for trying - good to hear from you.

jim catino, i think what you are doing for joanne is wonderful. i'd like to make a suggestion. when you have the benefit, how about including a silent auction? (you could also implement this at the ramble.) we've raised many thousands of dollars doing this at our kid's school. everything auctioned was donated by business owners and private parties. it's amazing how generous people can be, especially for a cause such as this. some of the things included in the auction were hotel weekend getaways, golf clubs, golf outings, chartered fishing outings, mini vegas vacations, dinners at local restaurants, tickets to sporting events, concerts and plays, free oil changes, dental exams, chiropractic sessions, movie tickets. gift certificates for hair salons, spas, bowling alleys, walmart, massages, a month of free workouts at a gym, gym bag, book stores. local crafters donated quilts and wreaths and such. and i think that one thing on the auction block that would attract a whole lot of bidders would be if the big hearted buffalo road show would donate a free evening of entertainment. with all of the graduation parties and weddings coming up that could bring in some bucks. how cool would it be to win the road show to play at the private party of the winning bidder? just and idea guys, no pressure. lol. but i know how much you love to play and how much you would be enjoyed, so it's a win-win situation! speaking of weddings, maybe a local tuxedo rental would donate a free tux for the groom, a florist a free bridal bouquet. how about 10 hours of free babysitting, that would really come in handy for a busy couple at Christmas time. perhaps a teacher might donate a month of tutoring, or a musician some free lessons in whatever instrument they play. there are tons of possibilities. as i said, people can be very kind hearted and generous to others in need. it's refreshing to know that so many people still rally to help even in this crazy 'me first' world we live in today. well, i hope i've been of some help. God bless joanne and her family. debi

Hi everybody, It's great to hear all the stories, and also hearing from many people I haven't seen or heard from in in years. Marty Bucsh, Jim (Marone) Pastore, Jimmy Laporte, Skip and Gail Ebling, by the way Gail thanks for rescueing George Tundo and me from Palumbo that night! I remember some of it. I am calling out to Batavia musicians to help out with a beniffit for Joanne (Veltz) Rock. To all you ramblers that live away, some sad news, there was a fire that destroyed the corner of Ellicott St. and Liberty. The old Gioia's DRUG store and the old Gino's Pizza building. Some Batavia history gone. But anyway Joanne had a buisiness in the building and lost everything, had no insurance. I'd like to help out and if any body has the time it would be appreciated. So far the P. Falcons have donated the room for an event. I think the city is going to put one on too. I will post the dates as soon as I know. Please contact me , or just post on this web site. Thank you ....to Mike Murray for creating this site, and thanks to anyone wishing to help. Thank you Pete Bordner for the call. I'm hoping Kenny Veltz will be commin back for the Ramble. Keep on sending the blasts from the past.

Love and miss you all. Health and Happiness to all....

Jim C

Thanks to Tim Laporte for the WBTA memories. Kev's cousin Danny Moyles was indeed "DM in the PM" but Chuck Platt ruled the air in those days. I remember his interview with Beethoven's Dream Group, as he premiered their 45 "Tobacco Road" Who remembers the B side?? (I do). Beethovens was all the rage with STP stickers on guitars and an all star cast of different Batavia bands. I believe about the same time The Plague became Apple Betty. Anybody comment?

Bob: Glad to see your message, and glad to hear Larry's doing better. I remember out at Byron Meadows when they were playing (think Hartley was on the piano?) - you would stand right in front of Larry and watch him without moving for a half hour. Love his faces when he plays.

Tell Lar that T sends his love and always - back to you from us!

I would like share a story about Bill Mac. They had live bands at WBTA back in 1967 or so, at the radio station. Some how i got in ,and manage a seat on the floor next to Bill. I was 12. I think the station was on sever place, or something, any way he was jammin on Gloria, a new rock+roll song by the shadows of night, i believe. It was like, Mick Jagar sitting at McCartneys feet, at the live broadcast of hey jude, watching every move!!!! THANKS BILL!!! Tim.

Hello everyone,

This is really great. It is so good to hear from so many old friends. All the memories come rushing back as I read all the comments. I was living in Dallas, TX for the last 10 years. I have just recently moved back to NY. I am now living out in Hamlin, NY. I bought Sandy Creek Marina and my house is behind the Marina. I had a great time at last years ramble. This year should be really exciting. I look forward to seeing you all there. NANCY

Hey all you rowdy Ramblers,

Just wondering if anyone has a picture of The Buffalo Road Show from the early to mid 80's. My brother-in-law, Mike Stamp was the drummer then and he has no pictures of that era. I would love to surprise him. Does anyone else remember, or will confess to doing "the worm" at the Byron Hotel? Kevin, I love the CD, especially "Baton Rouge" and "Maniac Junker". Any more on the horizon?

I see a lot of familiar names out there. Just to let you know I'm alive and doing well...and still playing. I'm currently working the blues with the Westside Blues Band. Current line up includes Chas DelPlato on organ guitar and vocals, Jim Patric on drums, Don Willard on bass and myself on guitar and vocals. We don't play a lot but we have fun when we do. If you'd like to be included on our email list for upcoming gigs let me know by emailing me and I'll include you on the list. Hope to see many of you at this years Ramble #2.

Just wanted to let everyone know that GO ART! will host a "Lyrical Poetry Reading" on Tuesday, March 27 at 7:00 p.m. Hopefully this will start some "pre-Ramble" buzz as well as draw attention to Arts Awareness Month. Roger Pitcher will recite original lyrics to some Buffalo Road Show tunes. Then, Bill McDonald and Jim & Babe Catino will provide the acoustic version. We hope that our audience finds the difference between the spoken word, and words that are sung to be entertaining and enlightening. This event is FREE, refreshments will be provided. Hope to see you here! GO ART! Cultural Center, 201 East Main Street, Batavia. Call 585-343-9313 for more information.

Wow! I feel like I've stepped back in time. Just scanning through here and looking at the names is incredible! Was it just yesterday that we used to hang out in Williams Park up on the hill? Aahhh...memories!

Cousin Brucie- you mentioned my friend Linda. Now, that goes back a ways. I think I must have been 15-16 years old when I hung around with her! I wonder what happened to her?

I'm going to try to plant the seed again, though. How about The Plague? Brother Wind? Or, here's one.... Slim Chicken and the Midnight Pickers!

Keep those emails coming, folks! It's really great to hear from so many folks and see so many names.

Ron Chaplin (Julius) turned me on to this space. Great job ! Here's a few more things to remember. How about "The Battle Of The Bands" at Alexander Fire Hall back in the late 60's and early 70's... great times, also great fights(before we all grew up and got along) Also the Tryst I think on Jackson St. a coffee house type of thing. I know there was no booze(unless you snuck in your own ! I hung with Julius but remember all the Batavia bands. Bill Pitcher used to teach at Alexander and coach Jr. High basketball...a long time ago. Have been in West Palm Beach, Fl. since 1980, but visit western N.Y. about once a year. Once again a great website.

After cruising the site and seeing many familiar names, I decided to jump on the Board as well. I graduated with Syd H. and Mike M. in 1973 from Pembroke. I left NY in 1977 and lived in Florida for 2 years (Cocoa, Pensacola). In 1979 Dan Moyles (DM in the PM) and I got married and we moved to Charlotte, NC. Dan and I have 2 sons, Daniel, 21 and Kristian,18. I've been in printing since 1975 doing art, film and digital pre-press work for commercial, textile and package printing. I enjoy my job, but it can be stressful at times, so I added a fun side job in Tupperware. Now I also get paid to PARTY! Thanks to all the Batavia memories, my Dad bought the old stained glass windows from the Dipson when it was being demolished and used them in his great room overlooking the Indian River in Cocoa. I'd love to hear from any of you that remember me or Dan!

Well now its about time the musicians got together and made a GREAT web site but they forgot some of the ones they enjoyed when they were young, like The Country Cousion back in the 50' - 60's and 70's on WBTA every saturday morning .Like Charlie Petty, Big Larry Merritt, and other great musicians I cant remember. And dont forget Roland Barbeau Jr (Rollie) ,Jimmy Tomacelly,K.G (a great keyboard) .And if you go back in time ,back in 1972 WCMF broadcast The Buffalo Road Show, Bill Pitcher,Bill McDonald ,Larry Merritt and others, and a well love Jim Kessler ( Face) . Just before my mother died (Alice Putney - Petty) she always wanted to see my Uncle (Charlie Petty) my cousian ( Roland Barbeau Jr) and me (Wayne Smith (Murdock)) get together and play, we did and it was the best birthday she ever had. Best of luck to all musicians in Batavia..

Hello Mary and Skip, I check the Ramble site from time to time and I have to respond to the one of The "Peanut Corp" of which I became part of in 1958 at the ripe age of 8 and the graduated to "Mighty Saint Joe's" at 16 year's of age. In 1968 the Drum Line won National's, we were undefeated that whole year! Man were we tight. The competition and camaraderie from which I got from being with the Corp has stayed with me through all these years and I am so grateful. Anyone that remembers can shoot me an e-mail.

Love the photos! what a great way to pass these winter months! I might be pushing it with this one but does anyone remember St joes Drum and bugle corps? it seems there was some familiar names and faces marching around the parking lot with me at the Batavia downs. it must have been 40 years ago.my father bill and Uncle paul went on the competitions with us. I was in the american flag squad. You may not want to reveal that much of your self but....you know who you are.

For Mr. Tom Everett : Mr. Tom Everett was the band director at BHS from 1967 to 1971. He had a large and immediate impact in the school, the band and the area during this time. I had just turned 17 years old in 1968 and had decided to play woodwinds ( starting on clarinet ). Who decides to play clarinet in 1968 at the age of 17 ? I was really lost. No one and I mean "No One", encouraged me in this area. I really didn't know where to turn. In stepped Mr. Tom Everett and Mr. Neil Hartwick. Threw their direction, instruction and motivation I stayed with the instrument. They even pointed me in the direction of the Eastman School of Music, Which turned into one of the most rewarding and significant experiences of my life. I was fortunate to have Mr Everett there. Any BHS students that knew Tom Everett or had him as a teacher should be thankful. Both he (Tom Everett ) and Neil Hartwick are great teachers , great motivators and great men. Thank you Mr. Everett.

The Ramble website was created just a few weeks ago. It came out of talks between Bill McDonald, Babe Catino, and me about how to spread the word about the Ramble. So far, I think we've been pretty successful in that and the Bulletin Board has been especially helpful in getting people reconnected with old friends.

After the Ramble website was up and running, I decided to use the web space that I get with my Verizon Internet account and make my own website. A place where I could practice my webmaster skills and stick a bunch of my stuff. It's not 100% done, but it's done enough to let people have a look.

One of the things that I put up there are some old photos that people have sent to me of the early Batavia music scene.

If you'd like to check out the old photos, go to:

mysite.verizon.net/michael_murray/id14.html

Please sign the Guestbook on the Guests page if you stop by so I know if anyone is interested in these old photos.

Do you have an old photo to share? If you don't have access to a digital scanner, take a picture of the old photo with a digital camera and send it to michael_murray@verizon.net. Include the who, what, where, and when. I'll put it up there if it fits the theme of "early Batavia music scene".

Anyone interested in a very entertaining and heartwarming account of "old" Batavia and its citizens, pick up the book by Bill Kauffman titled Dispatches from the Muckdog Gazette. You'll know many of the people mentioned. Don't let the big words scare you. Great book.

MR. EVERETT , NICE TO HEAR FROM YOU . I HAVEN'T SEEN YOU IN OVER 35 YEARS . YOU WERE VERY COOL AS A TEACHER BACK THEN . LOVED THE WAY YOU PLAYED TROMBONE . I SAW JIMI HENDRIX A FEW DAYS AFTER YOU DID IN BUFFALO WITH THE SOFT MACHINE OPENING , TOO . I MUST SAY IT WAS ONE OF THE MOST EXCITING CONCERTS I EVER SAW . HE FLIPED ME OUT WHEN I WATCHED HIM USE HIS THUNMB FOR A 5TH NOTE ON THE FRET BOARD . HE DID THINGS WITH THE GUTAIR THAT I THINK PEOPLE EVEN NOW DON'T UNDERSTAND . HIS USE OF FEED BACK WAS AN ART I NEVER HEARD ANYONE DUPLICATE . I ONLY HAD THE PLEASURE OF SEEING HIM ONCE BUT I WILL NEVER FORGET IT . HOPE ALL IS WELL WITH YOU AND HOPE YOU CAN COME TO THE RAMBLE , IF NOT THIS YEAR WE WILL HAVE MANY OTHERS . I REMEMBER YOU WELL . I DON'T KNOW IF YOU REMEMBER ME BUT THAT DOESN'T MATTER . YOU LOVED MUSIC AND BACK THEN WE LOVED YOU FOR IT . WOULD LOVE TO PLAY WITH YOU SOME TIME . HOPE TO SEE YOU SOON .

I was the Band Director at BHS from 1967-1971. Jim "Marone" Pastore mentions the BHS Band's trip to the Rochester War Memorial to catch the Jimi Hendrix Experience in concert (I believe it was '68 or "69). The warm up act was the Soft Machine. It was a terrific show...but when Hendrix's guitar was throw out into the audience, I was thinking...".there goes my job!" Fond wishes to my friends and students from the late 60's Tom Everett

Pattie,

That explains everything. I can't get a job, car loan, mortgage. No one ever told me. I always thought it had something to do with my the fact that I only have a birthday once every 4 years and that throws off the computers. Thanks for letting me know that I don't really exist! I feel so much better now.

Carol & Babe

We could sure swap some tales. I do remember Nicky Naples. I was thinking this morning of two occasions that we shared the stage with the Squires. One was a Sunday afternoon gig at the Delaware Ave. Cave in Buffalo and the other was an outdoor thing at Indian Falls amusement park. I remember the guys wearing three piece tweed suits trying to look as "Beatle" as they could. They were great. Back then we thought of them as little kids, but you could see even then that they were something special. Later on when Jim got a chance to take my place in the Humans I remember him being real excited about it. I regretted having to leave, but was very happy to have him step in. We had talked about it a lot and thinking back it seems funny that he wanted my spot, but I would have loved to have been him and had half his talent. I think of Batavia as a real special place for musicians. All the players in all the bands over such a long time. I remember lots of music over lots of years that was as good as it gets. Someone should write the history. The Albion Lanes is another story. If that place could talk! I have not played in years so you won't be hearing Take a Taxi live anytime soon, but I will make it to the Ramble and look forward to seeing old friends and meeting some new ones.

In some of the posts below there is mention of Bill McDonald organizing music events at Williams Park in Batavia. Someone mentions 1995. Well, I remember what must have been one of the very first ones back in 1970 or possibly 71. The cops came and busted it up and the The Batavia Daily News wrote it up like it had been a big drug and alcohol fueled reenactment of Woodstock. I wrote a letter to the editor of the newspaper saying what a nice bunch of boys and girls you all were, and they printed it. It made me famous amongst my small circle of friends for a couple of days. Then, a few years later, there was the time I ran into Jim Palumbo on Surfside Beach in Texas. The Buffalo Yankees were playing a few nights stand at "Pat's Place" on the beach and staying above the bar. Jim had a big ice chest filled to the brim with Bluetip Crabs that he had gathered spawning in shallow water and he was really proud of himself. Every single one of them was a female filled with eggs. It is illegal to keep the females. I don't think they ever cooked them either. I believe they all met an untimely death in that beer cooler. But, I could be wrong. My future wife, Jinxie McCann, was beertending at Pat's Place and drawing an unemployment check from good old New York State. She felt so guilty that she stopped turning in the paperwork and after a couple of months she got a real job. Then weeks later the Texas Unemployment Commission contacted her and asked her to come in and sign some forms and she got a big check for all the time that she didn't file. They told her that they didn't care if she had been looking for work or not. She was in Texas, she was gainfully employed and the money was coming from NY. Those were the days here in Texas. You didn't need any insurance for a car and it was perfectly legal to drink and drive, (people set their beer cans on the dashboard) if you were not drunk. A bag of weed was $10, a pound was $100. I think I was doing about $25 a weeks worth but I still went to work everyday. That's more than I can say now that I have good old "sick leave" benefits. Life is still great, but those were some unreal, or I should say surreal, times.

Marty,

Thank you for sharing your stories of Jim. I was with him at Jason's wedding reception. That brought back alot of happy memories for me. Their wedding anniversary was Feb. 14. I think it has been 10 years. Sandy and I are very good friends and talk almost every day.

And yes, he was a natural and he was most comfortable on stage.

I'm not sure I know you Marty. Did I meet you at Bill Kuhn's house? Are you an attorney?

I was so sad to hear that we lost Jim Palumbo. I first met Jim way back in the 60's when he was playing in the Squires. I remember Kenny Veltz's dad taking the band around to their gigs. Jim and I hit it off right from the start and would talk "shop" whenever we saw each other. Watching him play I quickly came to realize that he was one of those special people who was a natural at his craft. My favorite memory of Jim is sitting on the living room floor at my parents house in Medina listening our way through a big stack of records and being so excited to share our impressions of what we heard. Jim took my place in the Humans when I left for the Navy. We didn't see each other often in the past few years, but I thought of him often. The last time I had the pleasure to see him play was a few years back at Jason Karp's wedding party. I can't tell you the number of times I have told people about that. The image of him playing a Van Morrison tune with that look of pure joy on his face is stuck in my mind. I'll never forget him.

Hey George,

I do remember the barn trip with Georgie's Angels! Seems those clapped out Agway Econolines were everywhere...Steve Holnbeck had one too. It's now a chicken coop somewhere. This weekend I was talking to Kevin, as we always do and when we hung up I flashed back to a good memory. Your brother Ray and Kev and Lemanski often came out to South Byron in Aunt Bea's reliable but (strange to most)..Saab 96 station wagon...Drake Street Motors! Now here we are stilling thinking "mod", Beatles, Stones etc. Ray shows up at our house sporting cowboy boots, yoked shirt the long hair my old man hated, and the FIRST Sweetheart of the Rodeo" album in Batavia. He declares the British Invasion is dead, and orders us all to "go country". That was that. Went boot shopping that day. Moyles immediately covers "You ain't goin' nowhere" We got some Colt .45. Uh...no I don't drink that, UC, Rolling Rock or shorty Millers anymore. -Wes Coast.

Here I go again. I remember when Ann Phillips, Karen Lullo and Terry Gahagan where "Georgie's Angels" and we went everywhere together in my red Ford Econoline. When you have three female friends who look like playboy models all of your male friends suddenly want to start hanging around with you too. On one trip my van had Steve Holenbeck, Kevin Moyles, Karen Lullo, Terry (I Think) Ann (Pretty sure) maybe Wally Kowalik..It's hard to remember exactly but there wasn't a lot of spare room. That much I know. I think we went to Pittsford or somewhere in the middle of nowhere to a cool concert in a barn where just about everyone I knew was either singing or playing or watching and getting high and/or drunk. My god, it was heaven on earth for most of that summer. I was dating Terry. She dumped me by the time the Fair came to town. There went the angels. Oh well, I think I survied that heartbreak just fine. The next few years were even better. I'll tell you about them in another post.

Brucie raises a good question. How did we survive. Bruce and I went to the Attica Hotel Bar on Thursday nights because it was the day before the prison guards got paid and the hotel had a special of 25 cents for any drink in the house. We would spend five dollars and get blinded drunk and then I would drive my old rattle trap Ford Econoline van back to Batavia with one eye shut because of double vision. On my 18th birthday I was stopped by the police while driving home from getting drunk with Greg Holnbeck. I had two open bottles of beer in my van. The cops opened the side door and one of them got inside and sat on a cushion and commented on my "Big N" surface mount stereo speakers then they looked through the ashtray and shut the doors and then they were gone. I was dumbfounded. At first I was afraid to leave but then I left and drove home. I never told my mom or dad. It was the weirdest thing. I know it will never happen like that again in my life, that's for damn sure.
