This is a test to see if requiring all message posters to enter the letters and numbers that are in the image on the new message page into the adjacent text box will prevent the spambots from posting their unwanted messages. It is kind of like a universal password that only humans are supposed to be able to read and then enter.  Probably not a permanent solution, but worth a try.

Chas, That might be true. I've been doing a lot of research on the internet for this type of problem. I've learned the spambots might be writing their crap directly to the file that contains the messages which would mean they may not even be going through the Ramble web site. In that case, usernames and password for the site would be ineffective. I'll keep plugging away. I haven't given up yet! Mike

A few more items added to the Blasts from the Past page including another of the Ramblin' at Random articles by Roger Pitcher.  This probably dates from about March 1977 and makes three of the six known articles found.  Please check your shoeboxes and scrapbooks for the other three or any other similar memorabilia.

A Ramble musician from all three has passed on to the New Band in the Sky. Paul Rocco has left us at 47. You couldn't forget him...he played with the Orleans County Collective, a very animated and talented guitarist/vocalist sporting a '58 Gibson Firebird...I know this because he told me how it was his baby. Jeff Spevak writes his obituary in today's Rochester D&C Weekend insert. As Bill Vosteen remarked to me last year..."It's the Rocco Show...you just let him go."

Added by Ramble Webmaster:

Rocco, Paul A.
Waterport, NY: March 19, 2009 at the age of 47. He is survived by his daughter Krisandra; grand-daughter Gwenevere; father Donald (Micky) Rocco, mother Betty (Tom Jermyn) Rocco; brothers Donald (Linda) Rocco, Steven (Bambai) Rocco, Richard (Lisa) Rocco as well as several nieces and nephews. There will be no prior calling hours. A memorial service will be held on April 3rd at 11:00 AM at St. Mary's Church in Holley, NY

The cryptic messages that occasionally appear on the Message Board are commonly referred to as SPAM. They are unwanted messages that are posted by SPAMBOTS - automatic prgrams that search the internet with the sole purpose of finding places to post their ads for various products - none of which are welcome or endorsed by the Ramble Music & Arts Fest. They have been more frequent than usual lately. Please just ignore them and I will delete them as soon as I see them.

I will have my line of Leotardos ready for the Batavia Mill Outlet by Summer, but Spring is what brings me here today. I predicted that winter was over a couple of weeks ago. Maybe, but I remember a foot of snow by the time I left Gramdma's house after Easter dinner in 1973. The webcam will tell me when and if my prediction goes all to hell. Haha happy WNY Springtime, it really is the best because it is so appreciated by all involved.

George, Did you see any movies? I know those are going on there at that time too. And for the people in the Batavia area, don't forget you have your version of SXSW. It's NXNE and it takes place in Toronto, I believe in June so drive a coupleof hours and catch a lot of bands. I just opened up a new tab and it is June 17-21. 500 bands, 50 clubs and 25 movies. the site is nxne.com. Please go. I used to tell people about the toronto film festival in the 90's. Now it is second only to Cannes. george maybe in a few years I will get to go to SXSW. Cousin Brucie

In Austin, SXSW spawns many offshoots like: SX So What, SXS Congress, SX East Austin, et el. Take a hint Batavia, Anti-Ramble makes money too, and it means more fun. Unsanctioned and proud, in every parking lot in town! Woo hoo! "1st Annual William's Park Ramble My Ass Hoedown 2009!!" Woo woo woohoo! I stole this idea and now all you guys have to do is steal it from me. Ask McDonald if you don't know how to do it. Make it as much fun as humanly possible and it will do you proud.

Bill McDonald asked me to post the following last call for all hometown musicians.  We have already sent this information by email twice in the past month to all previous Ramble performers for which we had email addresses, but also wanted to post it here in case we missed anyone.  The response has been great so far.  Some performers have already accepted, some have already declined, and some have not replied one way or the other.  Please let Bill know your interest in participating in this year's Ramble Music and Arts Fest by Saturday March 20, 2009 so the lineup and time slots can be finalized.

The fourth annual Ramble Music and Arts Fest will be July 11, 2009 from 11 AM to 7 PM.

This year there will be two stages:

The Jackson Square Stage will be primarily for electric performers as it has in past years.

The Center Street Stage (near Adam Miller’s Toy Store) will be primarily for acoustic performers.

There will not be a stage in the School Street parking lot (across from O'Lacy's) like last year. While it did help accommodate more bands, it also seemed to split up the audience, not to mention being directly in the heat and sun.  O'Lacy's is still just a hop, skip and a stumble for anyone wanting to to take a break for a cold brew and bite to eat.

The Jackson Square stage will be equipped with the usual backline of two drum sets, two keyboards, guitar amps, bass amp, and percussion items.  The same professional sound company as last year, BNB Sound, will provide the main mixer, all front speakers, monitor speakers, mics, and stands as well as run all the equipment.  We ask that everyone work with what’s there except for your individual stringed instruments (no keyboards swaps or drums swaps please).

The Center Street stage will be equipped with front speakers, monitor speakers, mics, stands, and stools.  We ask that everyone work with what’s there aside from your individual instruments.

To accommodate everyone on a single electric stage, you are asked that if you play in multiple bands with common musicians, please combine into one group for a single time slot and use the one slot to support all your band configurations.  We're thinking fewer 3 or 4 person groups and more 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9 (or more!) person groups will give more people the opportunity to take the stage for longer time slots and less down time while bands get on and off the stage.

Please indicate your interest in performing at this year’s Ramble and also if you will be performing as an electric group, or an acoustic individual or group.  You are welcome to perform on both stages.

There will be about 10 time slots for the Jackson Square Stage and about 10 time slots for the Center Street Stage with a mix of past performers who have paid their dues and first timers to the Ramble to keep it fresh and evolving.

Send your reply email to billmac@rochester.rr.com or call Bill McDonald at 585 343 1929 and leave a message.

Please be prompt in your willingness to perform or your choice to decline.  This will be the last invitation.

Bill will also be making a list of volunteers of equipment for the event - drums, keys, amps, percussion, etc. - as well as stage wranglers to help in non-performing roles.  There's always plenty to do just before, during, and just after the event.

The week before and after the Ramble are always filled with live music in the local pubs, restaurants, coffee houses, on the street, and festivals.  These gigs usually accommodate many guests musicians and always seem to turn into big jam sessions.  Let us know when and where you are performing and we'll post all that we are aware of in the weeks before on the Ramble web site.

Thank you,

Ramble Posse

I saw Lucinda at the New Chapparel Lounge on South Congress Avenue in Austin Texas about twenty years ago. Roy Heinrich and the Pickups were playing and she sat down at the table next to me with a can of beer and a few friends. Her table and my table were the entire audience. Gurf Morlix from Buffalo is the real reason that Lucinda made it big. Even she will admit that. I'm going to see Gurf at Scholz Garten next Friday. No cover and free beer courtesy of Texas Music Magazine. SXSW is a cheap drunkards dream. You can party from 11am to dusk, see twenty bands and drink a case of beer for free, three days in a row. Two usually does me in.

To LeftyCoastal: I guess I'm in the best position to answer your question about Alison Colby, I played with her in two bands: Dusty Miller and Daybreakers. She is the youngest of the famed Colby sisters from Pembroke. One of which, Karen, was married to Keith Worthington for awhile. The three sisters used to do a bang up Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy. No, Alison has never done the Ramble. I don't even know where she is now or, obviously, how to get in touch with her; but I'd certainly love to hear her sing again as well. She had a great voice!

While I check in often, I have never felt compelled to post anything 'til now. Brother Wind's "Healer of the Hearts" happened to be in rotation and sounded strangely familiar. In checking the credits I was shocked to realize it was from a session I had sat in on one evening back in the "Delsonic" Basement Studio, umm...(several) years ago. Thank-you to Bob for keeping such detailed tape notes! It definitely shook a few cobwebs loose - what a trip!! p.s. I'm willing and available to "sit in" with anyone for the upcoming Ramble...

Someone had asked if anyone had heard of a drummer named Steve Gage back in February. Steve was an outstanding drummer from Perry. I beleive most of his experience was with Tri-Town Cadets Drum Corp and I beleive the Greece Cadets as well. He went on to get a degree from Fredonia. I also beleive he was judge for DCI as well.

A GREAT BIG HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Wally Wes Coast Kowalik, today March 4th!! His mother says he was quite the wild rascal as a toddler...things don't change much. Brother in law, Charlie and nephew, Charlie wish you a great new year as well. I can't believe it's been a year already since I last put this Happy Birthday post up!! By the way waldo, I see by the pic that you had a heapin' Jethro Bodine syle breakfast and Willy had... a cup of coffee, who paid? Love ya bro. T

Happy Birthday to Jim LaPorte (guitarboy). Let's see, March 5 of what year??!!! Its been my honor and privilege to have played in some great (and not so great!) bands with you Jim. I'm sure we'll be doing some more playing in the future as well. Get the boat out, its time to hit the lake again! Don Pickert Nashville, TN

Usually Billy and I hit the Dot on Saturday morning to discuss cold fusion and other breakthroughs of physics, like boiling old guitar strings back to life. But this particularly cold day we were approached by two snazzy babes, something that happens quite regularly, actually. Go ahead, have a laugh but the pictures tell the story, right Boss? PS: Willie paid, I left the tip. -Wes Coast

You'd win that bet, Skip.  Gail said that she and Ann Marie we're craving a beef on weck.

Looks like they settled for a Big Mac and White Hot.
